Campus Upgrades & Retrofits

Touro University California, Vallejo, CA

KPW conducted post-earthquake seismic evaluations on several of the historic buildings on the Touro University campus following the Napa 2014 earthquake, the most significant of which is the original Mare Island Naval Hospital Building H1. KPW provided ASCE 41-13 Tiers 1 & 2 evaluations, along with a Tier 2 conceptual retrofit study for Touro University. The historic campus is unique in that President Lincoln authorized the construction of the hospital shortly before his death in 1865. John McArthur Jr. designed the original facility in 1869; the hospital became the first modern naval hospital on the west coast. The hospital was demolished after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in 1898 and rebuilt in 1901. W.M. Poindexter designed the new Beaux-Arts style hospital using timber, instead of clay to better withstand earthquakes, though it took over two decades to complete fire-proofing.
